The 60’ Hatteras, Singularis hailing from Wilmington, Delaware was traveling north, about 20 miles offshore of Wrightsville Beach when they suddenly noticed a bad vibration from the starboard side. They deployed an underwater camera to check the props but could not see anything that would cause such a vibration.
They idled to Jarrett Bay Boatworks and arrived about 1:00 am on Thursday morning July 10th. Gregory Poole checked out the engines on Thursday morning and reported there were no issues with the fuel injection system. Sometimes an injector will misfire on the large high performance engines and give the impression that there is a vibration which is misinterpreted to be something wrong with the shaft or propeller.
The decision was made to haul the boat and check the running gear. Immediately Captain Jerry noticed something was not right with the starboard propeller. The propeller was removed and a large crack appeared. The shaft was broken over 90% of the way through. Captain Jerry and crew were very lucky they did not lose the propeller.
After removing the port propeller to examine the port side shaft it was determined the port shaft was cracked in the keyway. The decision was made to have two new shafts made. These were delivered to Jarrett Bay Boatworks on July 21st and components began to go back together. The vessel was launched and departed the next day.
